A field guide to China

Unlisted China

Some of China's best places live happily in Chinese — the noodle shop with no English menu, the teahouse no guidebook mentions. We find them, write them up, and give you the words to get in the door.

How this list is made

01

Found in Chinese, not in English

We start from Chinese sources and walk the streets. If a place already ranks well in English, it isn't unlisted — and it isn't here.

02

Every entry is verified on foot

Address, opening hours and whether it still exists. Until we've checked it ourselves, the entry stays marked verifying — we'd rather show less than send you to a closed door.

03

Nobody pays to be on it

No sponsored placements, no paid upgrades. No restaurant can buy a spot on this list.

Every entry comes with a China Card

Each place gets a printable card: the address in Chinese for your taxi driver, the dishes to point at, and the phrases that get you a corner table instead of a confused stare. Copy the name, paste it into Amap or Didi, and get there.
